Turnovers Plague Titans in Loss at Roanoke

Men’s lacrosse drops to 5-3 on season

SALEM, Va. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell at Roanoke University, 18-8, Saturday, March 14, in its first of two spring break games. The loss drops the Titans to 5-3 on the season, while the Maroons move to 5-1.

Turnovers plagued the Titans all game, as they were never able to find a rhythm, finishing with 26 miscues. RC notched the lead in shots (51-33), shots on goal (33-19), and ground balls (42-27), while going 25-of-30 in clear attempts. IWU finished with the advantage in faceoffs, going 17-of-28, and went 18-of-25 in clear attempts.

Freshman Holden Webster (Centennial, Colo.-Arapahoe) led the offense with three goals and three points. Junior Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) added a pair of points on one goal and an assist.

Senior Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and sophomore Charlie Burghardt (Milwaukee, Wis.-Brookfield Central) paced the team with three ground balls apiece. Sophomores Ethan Kavanaugh (Davis, Colo.-Davis Senior) and Nick Donohue (Glenview, Ill.-Glenbrook North) led the defense with two caused turnovers each.

At the X, the Green and White were led by sophomore Matt Arnold (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) and Rocco. Arnold notched a career-best 10 faceoff wins, going 10-for-15 on the day. Rocco added a 7-of-13 showing.

In goal for IWU, sophomore Jamyeson Zackery (Saint Paul, Minn.-Eastview) was tagged with the loss after spending all 60 minutes in goal. The sophomore made 15 saves on a .484 save percentage.

Junior Nate Pound (Theinsville, Wis.-Homestead) got the Titans on the board first, as his shot trickled into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 10:03 mark in the opening quarter.

Roanoke responded with four straight goals to jump ahead, 4-1, forcing head coach Zach Iannucci to call a timeout with just under five minutes to go in the first period. Out of the timeout, Zackery came through with three consecutive saves to get the Titans in transition, but RC came through with a save of its own.

The Maroons net one more to end the first period up 5-1.

Junior Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) found Webster during transition, who ripped a shot into the back of the net for a goal as time expired in the second period. The score cut IWU's deficit to 8-2 heading into halftime.

The Green and White utilized a man-up opportunity to begin the second half, as McHugh found freshman Garrett Wills (Sugar Grove, Ill.-Kaneland) in front of the net for a goal, making it 8-3 at the 14:19 mark.

The Maroons answered quickly after with a goal to re-up their lead to six with 13 minutes to play in the third period. They tacked on one more to make it a seven-goal differential.

Freshman Tyce Baldwin (Aurora, Colo.-Grandview) forced a turnover, and sophomore Jake Sline (Homewood, Ill.-Homewood-Flossmoor) made the Maroons pay with a goal, bringing the gap back down to six, 10-4, with over 10 minutes to play in the third.

IWU was unable to get the deficit any closer, ultimately falling 18-8.

Illinois Wesleyan will conclude its spring break trip at Pfeiffer University Tuesday, March 17. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET at Lefko-Mills Field.
