Two Titans Earn All-CCIW Honors for Women’s Lacrosse

Newton and Shore land second team honors

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team landed two Second Team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honors, announced by the organization Tuesday, April 28. Senior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and sophomore Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) earned the accolades for the Titans (6-10, 2-3 CCIW), who tied for third in the CCIW this season. Senior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) was IWU's recipient of the CCIW RESPECT award. 

Newton collects her second consecutive Second Team All-CCIW honor after a strong senior campaign. The Bloomington, Ill. native led the team with 13 goals and 15 points in CCIW play, while finishing third on the team in ground balls (12), caused turnovers (11), and draw controls (9). Within the conference, Newton ranked tied for fifth with an average of 2.60 goals per game, and tied for eighth with an average of three points per contest. Her 2.20 caused turnovers per game sit tied for seventh. A co-captain of the Titans, Newton earned CCIW Offensive Player of the Week and CCIW Defensive Player of the Week once this season. 

Shore earned the first all-conference honor of her career, joining Newton on the second team. She tied for the team-lead with 20 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers, and three assists. Shore finished second on the team in draw controls (12) and tied for third in goals (5) and points (8). The sophomore finished tied for second in the league in ground balls per game, averaging four per contest. Her 2.40 caused turnovers per game tied for fourth, while her average of 2.40 draw controls per game ranked tied for ninth in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan earned the fourth seed in the CCIW Tournament and will head to Carroll University to face the top-seeded Pioneers (14-2, 5-0 CCIW) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday night, April 29.
