ST. LOUIS, MO. - Day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships came to an end Friday, Sept. 23 in St Louis. The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team sent senior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) and junior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) to compete in the opening, 64-field, round of doubles play. McCoy, along with freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) took part in singles action. Both McCoy and Turnbull take on the ITA's for the first time in their career, as Burk returned for the second-straight season and third time in his career.

The Titans' doubles duo of Burk and McCoy had an early start with a first serve scheduled at 8 a.m. against Trine University's Andrew Dixon and Cole Goodman. Burk and McCoy were unable to hold off the Thunder's pairing and fell 8-4.

Freshman Turnbull, making his ITA debut, defeated Trey Kernan from Baldwin Wallace University in singles play. Turnbull won in commanding fashion with scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to move to the 32-field round to face University of Chicago's Emil Grantcharov right after. However, Turnbull could not pull out his second-straight match win of the day as he dropped his game with scores of 6-3 and 6-0.

After a rain delay pushed back singles play, McCoy went head-to-head against Allegheny College's Anton Hedlund for a 3 p.m. start time. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native dropped in both sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to move McCoy to the elimination 32 round consolation bracket. Due to weather conditions, all consolation games were moved to Saturday, Sept. 24. As a result, McCoy is scheduled to resume play Saturday against Sarthak Sharma from Earlham College.

The Green and White return tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 24 for day two of the ITA Regional Championships. For more information about the tournament click here
