Track Combines for Nine First-Place Finishes at Friday Night Tri

Teams earned a total of 22 top-three finishes

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Friday Night Tri, Friday, Feb. 18 inside of the Shirk Center. The Titans won nine events on the evening.

IWU welcomed Benedictine University, Heartland Community College, and Millikin University for the one-day meet. The women's team earned five first-place finishes, while the men accumulated four. Additionally, the IWU women's team notched 13 top-three finishes, while the men generated nine top-three finishes. 

On the women's side, freshman Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) bested the field in the one mile competition, as she claimed first place with a time of 5:36.55. Also in the mile, sophomore Tia Hardt (Lexington, Ill.-Lexington) took third place as she crossed the finish line at 5:41.63.

In the 200 meter sprint, the Titans swept the podium. Junior Addison Bendery (Chicago, Ill.-Loyola Academy) took first place (26.92), sophomore Avery Smith (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) took second (26.92), and freshman Davion Lemon (Marrero, La.-Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy) took third (27.12). 

Two sprinters earned a top-three finish in the 60 meters. Bendery claimed her second first place  victory with her sprint of 7.94, while Smith earned third as she finished with a time of 8.20.

In the high jump event, freshman Evelyn Wilson (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) topped the field with her jump of 1.55 meters. Senior Emma Helferich (Monticello, Ill.-Monticello) jumped her way to victory as she posted the top distance of 5.40 meters in the long jump competition.

Senior Jenna Mirande (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) continued the winning ways for the Green and White as she notched a first-place finish (11:08.50), while sophomore Amanda Wilson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) finished third (11:47.50) in the 3000 meter race. 

Junior Kinlee Miller (Tuscola, Ill.-Tuscola) earned a third-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.89. Also placing third in the 800 meter race was junior Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian) with a time of 2:33.32.

For the Titan men, junior Keondre Schumacher (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) won the 60 meter dash race as he posted the winning time of 7.05 (ran a 7.03 in the preliminary round). 

Freshman Luan Ademovski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Elk Grove) blew the shot put field out of the water, clearing the competition by nearly three meters with his winning distance of 15.49 meters. 

In the 400 meter dash event, sophomore Kade Murray (Watseka, Ill.-Watseka Community) posted the second-fastest time as he crossed the finish line with a mark of 51.97. Right behind Murray, junior Ethan Ruth (Winfield, Ill.-Hinsdale Central) placed third with a time of 52.88.

Junior Christian Gatsos (Brookfield, Ill.-Lyons Township) bested the pole vault field as he cleared the 3.80 meter mark to take first. 

The Green and White went one-two in the 3000 meter run as junior J.D. Barrett (Tuscola, Ill.-Tuscola) won with a time of 9:09.36 and freshman Nick Fisch (Woodridge, Ill.-Montini Catholic) took second with a 9:10.79 finish.

Freshman Ernie Waterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Cornerstone Christian Academy) earned a second place finish in the 800 meter race with a mark of 2:06.08.

In the weight throw competition, freshman Matthew Wagner (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic) earned a third-place finish with his distance of 11.57 meters.

Both teams will next compete in the highly anticipated two-day College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26. Both days' events will begin at 12 p.m.
