Julia Calvin Joins Track & Field Staff as Throws Coach

One of top throwers in Illinois State history

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan University Director of Track and Field and Head Women's Coach Chris Schumacher announced the addition of Julia (Bourke) Calvin as a throws coach Friday morning, July 16. Calvin joins the Titans after an outstanding career at Illinois State University.

"Julia brings 10 years of throwing experience to our program, including multiple All-Missouri Valley Conference honors and," Schumacher said. "We are honored and delighted to add her to our staff."

Calvin earned numerous All-Missouri Valley Conference honors throughout her career. She was a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team pick, and was listed as the MVC Female Field Athlete of the Week. 

One of the best throwers in ISU history, Calvin led the Redbirds to five Missouri Valley Conference Championships. At this past season's indoor MVC meet, Calvin placed third in shot put with a season-best throw of 14.78 meters. She followed it up with a fifth-place finish at the MVC Outdoor Championship, scoring points towards ISU's title. Additionally, she qualified for the NCAA West regional in hammer throw. Overall, she finished her career ranked third in Rebird track and field history in hammer throw (62.96m), fifth in indoor shot put (15.91m) and seventh in outdoor shot put (15.58m).

A native of Melbourne, Australia, she earned her degree in nursing from Illinois State this past May.
