Softball "White-Out" April 1 to Benefit Lung Cancer

3/27/2015 3:25:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Originally scheduled for last weekend, the Illinois Wesleyan softball games on Wednesday (April 1) are designated as "White-Out" games to raise awareness for lung cancer and to assist a former teammate of two members of the Titan coaching staff.

The color for lung cancer awareness is white so all fans are encouraged to wear white shirts to demonstrate their support at the 4 p.m. doubleheader against Monmouth College at the IWU Field.

Molly Hardesty, a former teammate of head coach Kat McCreery and assistant Sammi Whitcomb on the Peoria Outlaws, was diagnosed with lung cancer last fall. A non-smoker, she was found to have the ALK fusion gene responsible for this cancer just recently. Hardesty is a former softball player at Eureka College and has been the head softball coach at Bartonville (Ill.) Limestone High School. To read more about Hardesty, read this article.

There will be a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to defer Hardesty's medical bills and small white ribbons will be on sale for $1. The Titans will wear white headbands, jerseys, pants, and socks and the Monmouth team will wear white ribbons on their jerseys. At various times during the game, facts about lung cancer and its causes and cures will be announced.
