IWU Softball to Host Military Service & Veterans' Games

4/17/2014 3:06:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball doubleheader against Chicago beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday is designated as "Military Service/Veteran's Day" at IWU softball field, recognizing those currently serving and veterans from each branch of the military.

The Titans will be wearing camouflage uniforms and batting helmets to show support for our veterans and honor their service and, prior to the game, the team will recognize each branch of the military and ask those currently serving and veterans to stand and be recognized prior to the National Anthem.

Also pregame, Lyle Day, a 20-year volunteer assistant coach at Illinois Wesleyan and military veteran, will be throwing out the first pitch.

Donations will be accepted during both games to benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which serves U.S. military personnel wounded or injured in service to our nation, and their families.  Supporting these heroes helps repay the debt all Americans owe them for the sacrifices they have made in service to our nation.  For more information, click here for the Fallen Heroes web site.

There will be a raffle for a new iPad Mini throughout the games. Tickets are $5 for one and $10 for three with 100 percent of the proceeds from the iPad raffle also going to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

At the conclusion of each inning in game one, IWU will recognize the veterans in attendance for their service if they have 'signed in' at the front gate as well as those not in attendance but listed on the sign-in sheet.

In between games of the doubleheader, there will be a free meal to all those currently serving/veterans and their friends and families just west of the softball field.
